Lijiang - Yunnan Southwest ChinaThe Yangtse River and
the Yellow River
are well-known as the two longest rivers in China and are noted as "
Giant Asian Rivers". Situated between 99o 30' E to 100o 50' E and
26o N to 27o 50' N, Lijiang can be
easily located by every tourist from abroad when they trace along
the Yangzi River from its mouth in Shanghai back toward its source.
The ajncient town of Lijiang is a
traveler's wonderland which has been classified as a World-class
Cultural Legacy by UNESCO, "Nationallevel Scenic Zone" and a
"National Town of History and Culture". Lijiang is a
beautiful shining jewel on the Northwest Yunnan Plateau neighbouring
the southeast side of the Tibentan Plateau which is considered to be
the "Roof of the World" . It covers an area of 20,600 square
kilometers with a population of 1,030 ,000. The whole district is
comprised of four counties: Lijiang,
Yongsheng, Huaping and Ninglang. LiJiang's weather is remark-ably
pleasant. Spring there lasts as long as 241 days and there is no hot
summer. Lijiang is 600
kilometers away from Kunming. The airport in LiJiang had been opened
in 1994.
Lijiang boasts of breath -
wonderful sights such as Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan)
and its modern maritime glacier, the only one of its kind in the
southern end of the Northern Hemisphere; Tiger
Leaping Gorge ( Hutiaoxia ); the world - famous grand canyon; Lugu Lake, the
culturalcradle of the "Matriarchy" of the Yongning Mosuo
people in Ninglang; the Old Town of Dayan Lijiang, which is referred
to by European and American tourists as the "Oriental Venice" .All
these natural sceneries and these cultural treasures of the minority
peoples, such as Dongba Culture, Naxi Classical Music,Baisha Murals and
Mosuo Customs, have been continuously drawing tourists from all over
the world and have recently vote Lijiang as one of
the favorite destinations in China.
Wildlife peculiar to China includes such
well-known animals as the giant panda, golden-haired monkey, South
China tiger, brown-eared pheasant, white-flag dolphin, Chinese
alligator and red-crowned crane, totaling more than 100 species.
In China, there are more
than 7,000 species of woody plants, including 2,800 tree species.
The metasequoia, Chinese cypress, China fir, golden larch, Taiwan
fir... The meta sequoia, a tall species of arbor, is considered as
one of the oldest and rarest plants in the world.
25km from Lijiang, Mules can be rented from
the nearby Baisha Village or you can take a cable car to the top.
A mountain massif (also identified as
a small mountain range) visible from Lijiang and capped all year
round. Its highest peak is Shanzidou at 5,596m. The view of the
massif from the gardens at the Black Dragon Pool in Lijiang is noted
as one of China's finest views. The far side of the mountain forms
one side of Tiger Leaping Gorge. You might be asked to purchase
tickets for electrical car, which they call it as "Little Green
frog". It's not worth it. You would miss the 20 minute walk on a
wood trail which was very enjoyable. Also, renting a coat is not
necessary during the late spring and summer season. You would find
it a big burden later. On you way to Yu Long Snow Mountain, you may
stop by at the Dong Ba Valley culture
center.
A
cultural show demonstrating the traditions and lifestyles of the
Naxi, Yi and Bai peoples of the area. The show takes place inside
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park at 3500m in an outdoor theater
specifically designed to showcase the mountain which is used as a
backdrop. The production itself was designed by ZhangYimou (director
of Hero, House of Flying Daggers), a cast of over 500 people, and a
number of horses. However, the show does have a plot.
Is located on the
southern slope of Yulong (Jade Dragon) snow mountain and it is a
part of the Lashihai provincial level Alpine Wetlands Nature
Reserve. The elevation at Wenhai is 3,100 meters. The Wenhai area is
an ideal location for visitors to explore and learn about
northwestern Yunnan's dramatic grological formations and rich
biodiversity. The unique climate and soil in the area nourished a
variety of vegetative covers and plant species. Including old-growth
forests, shrubs and meadows. There are also unique wild flowers that
bloom all four seasons. Including over twenty species of
rhododendrons. Wenhai is also home to a variety of economically
viable mushrooms and precious medicinal herbs.
There are many
route choices to reach Wenhai from the Lijiang old town ,the
distance is between 20 to 25 kilometers long. On each of the route,
you can ride in a car for some distance, and the rest of the
distance you can hike or horse-back ride up to Wenhai are mostly
uphills. The elevation rises fron 2,400 meters in Lijiang to 3,100
meters in Wenhai are meters im Wenhai. Beginning the hike from Yuhu
or Longquan (a.k.a. Shuhe),most visitors take about 4 hours to get
to Wenhai.
There is a
variety of extraordinary scenery aling the hiking trail to Wenhai,
and with the exception of a few places, the vegetative covers of the
area are mostly intake. On a good day, you can view from the various
scenic look-out points the widely-spread Lijiang basin below or the
towering Jade Dragon snow Mountain above. The various rhododendron
shrubs and plants around Wenhai provide great opportunities for
visitors to relax, enjoy and learn in the area.
A small
village in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, part of Lijiang city,
well-known for its Jade Dragon Snow Mountain range. It is the
original settlement of the Naxi people who came to the greater
Lijiang Valley over a thousand years ago. Made up of at least 12
smaller villages, the main village is Sanyuan, which has one main stone street called of
course, Baisha Street.
It has a
typical Chinese "old-town" tourist setup, consisting of a stone
paved street with a mixture of Chinese trinket sellers-shops and
several quaint caf¨¦s to stop at relax, have a drink some Yunnan
coffee eat a Naxi Pie and avoid the crowded Lijiang. A great escape
from Lijiang Old-town tourist trap, only 12 km north of town, you
can rent a bike and get there in about 40 minutes. You should
consider staying a few nights, in a Naxi family¡¯s courtyard, no
"hotel-Hostels" here. Even though almost everything costs you a
ticket price to do in China these days you can do many things here
for free! Like hike the local mountains through the high alpine
botanical garden and search for herbs on your way to the Jade Dragon
Lake, the backside of Snow Jade Dragon Mountain. Visit some of the
temples or traditional Naxi houses of the area before they are gone.
If you look on a
map of China, you will notice, sandwiched between Thailand and
Tibet, a Chinese province called Yunnan. Zoom in more closely and let your eye follow the line
of the Yangtze River as it curves in a distinctive hook marking the
great First Bend of China's longest river.
As China's Mother River turns
sharply northwards at the First Bend, its waters flow placidly a
further 30 kilometers until confronted by a narrow gorge, Tiger
Leaping Gorge. As it enters the
gorge, the previously placid river writhes and roars for 17
kilometers through a series of rapids too dangerous for rafting (ask
Richard Bangs!). On the eastern bank above the surging river rise
the imposing granite peaks of the Jade Dragon Snow
Mountains...
A sub-alpine lake
within the Lashihai Nature Reserve (Situated along the southeastern
slopes of the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5500 meters) and
surrounded by mountains on all sides, the diamond-shaped basin of
Lashihai Watershed is a spectacular setting for exploring the
intricate relationship between the abundant natural resources of
this land and the people who live off it.), is a habitat for
migrating birds, most notably the endangered black stork. Each year,
for reasons not yet completely known, Wenhai undergoes a
transformation from sub-alpine lake to grazing grasslands. Beginning
in early spring, the lake gradually disappears, believed to drain
through underground limestone formations to Lashi Lake, about 500
meters below. Then, with the return of the summer rainy season,
Wenhai Lake begins to fill again. By fall it reaches its full size,
ready for the arrival of migratory birds in late December. The
watershed¡¯s highland forests support a wide variation of plant and
animal species, including protected raptors, forest wildlife,
traditional medicinal plants and treasured fungi. In spring, the
region¡¯s famous rhododendrons ¨C over 15 species -- burst into bloom,
creating mountains of colorful flowers.
2690 metres
above sea level located at the borders between Sichuan and Yunnan
Provinces, covers an area of 50 square kilometers with the average
water depth of 45 meters and the transparency 11 meters. In the lake
there are five islands, three peninsulas and a sea- wall islet. Here
everything looks as if it has not been disturbed by human beings at
all and still remains in its primitive state.
Boating in the
lake, you can feel that the surface of the water is as smooth as a
mirror and the water as blue as the sky. The slow ¨C canoe in the
blue lake, the beautiful Mosuo girls in their ethnic clothes and the
Mosuo folk songs will show you something of primitive simplicity and
peace. Lugu
Lake has the fame of a fabled
abode of immortals and ¡°Plateau Pearl" for its pure and virgin land
of natural landscapes...
The Mosuo people
living here still keep their matriarchal society system. The "Axia
visiting marriage'' system (actually no marriage system at all)is
called the fossil for the study of the development of the human
being society .The members of the big matriarchal families live in
harmony, love dearly and care for one an other.
Is located in Sanba Township
100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Shangri-La county seat. Measuring 140
meters (about 459 feet) in length and 160 meters (about 525 feet) in
width, it is one of the biggest such limestone
terraces in China. The terrace is covered by a layer
of white deposits of calcium carbonate crystallized in the spring
water. In addition to the spectacular terrace itself, visitors can
also learn about the ethnic Naxi minority and folklore in the nearby
Baidi village...
Yalong Bay
