Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang

Day by day itinerary

Locating between 10004'-10016'east longitude and 2703'-2740' north latitude, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Consisting of 13 peaks, among which Shanzidou is the highest one with an altitude of 5,596 meters (18,360 feet), Jade Dragon Snow Mountain stretches a length of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a width of 20 kilometers (13 miles). Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers (nine miles) away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence, the name Jade Dragon Snow Mountain...

Haba Snow Mountain in Lijiang

Day by day itinerary

Haba Snow Mountain (haba xueshan) boasts glaciers, lakes and waterfalls, and contains one of the best preserved nature reserves in near Lijiang. The main peak of the mountain is 5396m above sea level and is capped with snow all year round. On the mountain side, crystal-clear glaciers hang and the valleys on the northern side of the mountain are dotted with numerous lakes, the most beautiful being Heihai Lake. Each year between June and August millions of azaleas come into bloom. One of the most unusual things about this spot is that you can walk on the flowers without crushing them!

There are also many waterfalls here. Tumbling down the northeastern side of the mountain is Haba Waterfall, also known as the "Great Hanging Water", which is more than 200m high and pours down with an amazing momentum.

The mountain is also rich in animal resources. Yunnan gold-haired monkeys, rhesus monkey, wild boar and even snow leopards, pandas and black bears inhabit this wild land. Rare plants and medical herbs also thrive here, including orchids, lily and Chinese caterpillar fungi...

Baima Snow Mountain in Zhongdian

Day by day itinerary

The Lancang River, flanked by the Yunling and Nushan Mountains, flows torrentially from north to south. Most people know this river from Xishuangbanna, where its course is wide and the current flows gently enough for the Dai people to cross or transport goods by boat. After entering Myanmar, the Lancang becomes known as the Mekong River, which also flows through Vietnam, Laos and Thailand before emptying into the Indian Ocean. River rafting in this "Three Rivers Flowing Side by Side" area, with its high mountains, deep gullies, great drops and torrential currents, is impossible. The Baimang Snow Mountain -- a transitional area between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains separating the Jinsha and Lancang rivers -- has more than 20 snow-capped peaks, all more than 5,000 meters above sea level. The distance from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the valley is more than 3,500 meters, and its vertical distribution of vegetation coverage has given it the name "kingdom of alpine plants." The state has designated the area a national nature reserve. It is a sanctuary for 80 endangered species, such as the lesser panda, cinereous vulture, snow leopard, blood pheasant, Tibetan-eared pheasant, sunbird and Yunnan golden monkey.

Trekking Genyen in East-Tibet Kham

Day by day itinerary

Situated at Litang, the Holy Mt. Genyen is the main Peak Shaluli Shan and as high as 6,204 meters above sea level. All through the ages many Buddhist hierarchs had come over to practice at this mountain; hence the name Genyen meaning meditator in Tibetan. In 1169, Dusum Khyenpa the founder of the Karma Kagyu established Lenggu Monastery in this mountain. At present, the hand trace of the first Karmapa still remains on the rock behind the monastery. The murals in the temple tell us the legends of every peak of the holy mountain. In the caves, which are densely distributed around mountain, the monks still reside and keep on practicing.

Around Genyen, there are dozens of peaks above 5,000 meters. With bare rocks and precipitous cliffs, the Genyen Peak is capper with snow all year round. On the mountain slopes are the plateau wild forests, closely connecting with grasslands and shrubs. In the vast valley are winding streams and dense swamps and grassy marshland.

Gongga Snow Mountain in Sichuan

Day by day itinerary

Towering to a height of 7,556 meters (24,784 feet), Mt. Gongga in western Sichuan Province offers stunning scenery, an abundance of beautiful plants and wildflowers, rich Tibetan culture, and of course spectacular trekking routes. Known as the "King of Sichuan Mountains", Mt. Gongga is situated in the rugged, seldom visited western part of Sichuan Province, within the Tibetan cultural sphere. Over the course of this 12-day trek, Tibetan guides lead us across three passes over 4,420 meters (14,498 feet), and through a variety of alpine terrains with lakes and meadows. We stop in Tibetan homes and share butter tea and tsampa with our hosts. The climax of the trip will be our visit to Gongga Temple, which in times past produced many famous lamas.

The preferred months for this trek are May, August, September, and October, when there is little rain and the mountain views are clearest. In May you have the added bonus of rhododendrons in bloom. You may also visit during the rainy season in July, when you can see wildflowers spreading over grasslands everywhere, but clouds may obscure your views of the high mountains, and you should be prepared to be wet.
