Trekking Guiling's
Backcountry
Our trip starts
with three days of trekking through rice terraces and bamboo covered
mountains. This part of the country is not particularly suitable for
agriculture, and so the Zhuang and Yao people that settled here had to
meticulously carve their fields from the sides of the mountain. The
result is stunning to behold, especially when the paddies are
submerged and sparkle under the sun. During the trek, we share our
morning and evening meals with our Zhuang and Yao ethnic group hosts
in their homes. After three days on the trail, we drive to Yangshuo,
and then enjoy the world-famous karst landscape of the Li River on a
boat trip back to Guilin.
Day by ay
itinerary
Day 1 Guilin
The Eco-tours'
guide will meet you at the Guilin airport where you will transfer to
your hotel, the rest of the day is free to explore the city or take a
leisurely stroll along the Li River.
Day 2 Jiuwu
Village
Starting early in the morning, we head north of Guilin to
Longsheng County, where our hike will begin. The trail traverses
terraced slopes and bamboo forests and connects several Zhuang and Yao
minority villages in the area. The solitude and calm of the trail are
overwhelming, and at times the only sounds we hear come from a
babbling brook or chirping bird. The hike ends in Jiuwu Village,
literally "old house" village, where we overnight with a local family
and experience their generous hospitality.
Day 3 Tiantao
Village
From Jiuwu, we continue our journey to Tiantao Village,
passing through several other minority villages on the way. Many of
these villages are very remote, and are only accessible via the trail
we are following. Therefore, we can experience a side of China that,
even today, has hardly been touched by the many changes sweeping
through other parts of the country. Looking out over the terraced
landscape, it is hard to imagine how long it took to carve the
mountains into the beautiful scene unfolding around us.
Day 4
Ping'an Village
Today, we finish the last portion of our hike and
end in Ping'an Village. The village is nestled high on the mountain
slope, and overlooks a breathtaking view of a wide expanse of
carefully carved fields. After three long days on the trail, the
comforts of Ping'an are well deserved. In the evening, we can enjoy
the sunset from an outdoor patio overlooking the valley.
Day 5
Yangshuo
After a leisurely breakfast in Ping'an, we drive to
Yangshuo. Yangshuo is home to some of the most dramatic scenery in all
of China. With rugged limestone peaks soaring out of the otherwise
flat terrain, the landscape is truly unique. Unlike Guilin, Yangshuo
is still a relatively small city, and thus it is easy to enjoy the
beautiful natural surroundings. The day is free to explore the many
shops and cafes of Yangshuo, or to hike or bicycle out into the
countryside to view the stunning rock formations.
Day 6 Xingping
Teday we will drive to Xingping
town,hiking around the picturesque countryside surrounding Xinping,we
will then take a boat to Yucun village by the Liriver and we will have
lunch at the village,then back to Xingping by boat,we will stay
Xingping for over night.
Day 7 Guilin
In the morning we will
drive back to Guilin. As you sit on the deck of the boat, it will seem
as if you are viewing one scroll painting after another. This is
territory that has inspired Chinese artists of all sorts for thousands
of years. Along the way, we may even see local villagers prowling the
river in their traditional boats and employing cormorants for an
unusual way of fishing. In the evening, we will send you to the
airport for you return flight, and the trip end.

Biking Guilin's
Backcountry
The ethereal
beauty of Guilin's landscape has inspired poets and artists for
centuries and biking is a perfect way to get off the tourist path and
see it's enchanting backcountry of rice paddies, lush mountains, and
old villages. In Yangshuo, a sleepy backpacker's enclave, you can
enjoy cycling along the river and enjoy the scenery of rugged
limestone peaks soaring out of the otherwise flat terrain, the
landscape is truly unique. In Longsheng, we bike and hike through
charming Zhuang and Yao minority villages. In between our backcountry
biking exploration, we also take a relaxing cruise on the famous Li
River past some of Guilin's most impressive scenery, and also visit
the stunning terraced rice fields of Longsheng.
Day by day
itinerary
Day 1, Fly to Guilin
Upon
arrival in Guilin, we are met by our local guides and transfer to the
hotel. The rest of the day is free for us to explore the city or take
a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Li River.
Day 2, Guilin
to Longsheng to Guilin
Today we depart Guilin for the magnificent
terraced rice fields of Longsheng, carved into the hillside over
hundreds of years by the local Zhuang and Yao people. The rice fields,
when filled with water, resemble dragon's scales, hence the mountain's
name - Dragon's Back. In Longsheng, we take a pleasant 1.5 hour bike
ride along the mountain roads before reaching a mountain trail for
hiking. This trail traverses terraced slopes and bamboo forests and
connects several Zhuang and Yao minority villages in the area. The
solitude and calm in the forests are overwhelming, and at times the
only sounds we hear come from a babbling brook or chirping bird. We
return to Guilin late in the afternoon.
Day 3, Guilin to
Yangshuo: Li river cruise
In the morning, we take a leisurely boat
ride to Xinping, an ancient town near Yangshuo. As we sit on the deck
of the boat, it will seem as if we are viewing one scroll painting
after another. This is territory that has inspired Chinese artists of
all sorts for thousands of years. Along the way, we may even see local
villagers prowling the river in their traditional boats and employing
cormorants for an unusual way of fishing. Upon arrival in Xinping, we
get on our bikes for a relaxing 2-hour ride around the picturesque
countryside surrounding Xinping. We arrive in Yangshuo early in the
evening, and after dinner, we are free to explore the bustling West
Street of Yangshuo.
Day 4, Yangshuo
We start our morning
biking exploration by heading towards Aishan village via the old
country road to Yongcun village. We pass by picturesque hamlets,
tucked among subtropical plants and stretched in between rice paddies.
As we bike, in the distance we will see the famous Moon Hill. We can
get to the summit of Moon Hill after climbing 819 steps to a have a
bird's-eye-view of the surrounding hills and have a close look of the
"Moon" which used to be the underground river canal. We return to
Yangshuo for lunch then spend the afternoon exploring the countryside
by bike. If the season is right, we are certain to see water buffalo,
rice farmers and cormorant fisherman. Riding through the serene
villages, we can stop to chat with local farmers.
Day 5,Yangshuo
Day free for relax
Day 6,
Yangshuo to Guilin
This morning, we depart Yangshuo by bus, and
drive for 1.5 hours to Guilin to catch our flights back home. Trip
ends.
